Defensive Drills For Coaching Youth Baseball Middle Infielders

Drill - DIRT LINES "Ground Ball Drill" Great Drill For Teaching Ground Ball Fundamentals.

This drill is used to teach young players to get their hands and glove out front when fielding a grounder. The young player often gets in the habit of catching grounders close to his or her feet or slightly in front of the toes. As coaches, we want infielders to extend their arms and get the glove out in front so that they can see the ball into it. The player should "lay" the glove on the ground out in front of his body. Each players distance will vary. However, a good rule of thumb is to try and extend the length from the players arm or from the tip of the fingers to the armpit. Another good measuring scale is they should be able to extend the length of the bat they use. This distance is measured on the ground from the back of his heel outward. For this drill we pair two players. The players will roll grounders to each other from about 6 to 8 feet. The coach draws two lines in the dirt about 8 feet apart. The players must catch the ball out in front of this line. The coach will then draw a second line for each player. This is the "feet" line. The feet must stay behind this line. The players roll the ball and catch it while making sure to:

Get extension by getting the glove out in front. Keep the elbows off the ribs Funnel the ball in using the top "bare" hand. Work their feet as they bring the ball up to the correct "T" throwing position. Roll the ball back to your partner Repeat the process. Players should catch and roll 50 to 100 ground balls each practice. The distance can be changed to accommodate the speed of the ground ball work.
Drill - Make Believe Infield Drill Great warm-up for certain situations   The teams takes perfect infield by allowing every player to make a perfect catch and throw. The way this drill is conducted is the coach does not use a ball. He hits a "make-believe" ball. Each time the player goes through the correct motion of fielding the ball and making a perfect play. Each time the player receiving the throw will pat his glove to simulate a catch. Emphasis is placed on talking, following through, and making everything look perfect. No one will mess up or make a bad mistake. I have used this drill many, many times in practice and before games. It is especially good with young kids to emphasis correct body mechanics. It is also useful if you get to a field for a game and the playing surface is too wet or rough to take a "good" round of infield. Sometimes it is better not to use a real ball in warm-up if there is a risk of the ball taking a terrible bounce. Bad infield and warm-up may bring down "team esteem". I've never had a team take "make believe" infield that was anything less than great! It's always perfect!

Drill - Ground Ball Pair Work Drill for Infielders This drill is actually a method of taking a lot of ground balls with out having your players make any throw. The drill requires 36 baseballs, two buckets and a fungo bat. The coach will be hitting ground balls to at least 3 players. 5 or 6 players can be worked at a time using this drill. The coach will place the two buckets about 45 feet apart. All of the balls are in one of the buckets. This is the bucket that the coach will get his balls from. The players are lined up single file with one behind another, on the end with the empty bucket. The coach hits grounders. The players field each ground ball and get in proper throwing position. They then sprint to the empty bucket, drop the ball in and get in the back of the line. There is no throwing of balls during this drill. When all balls have been hit, fielded and dropped in the bucket, the coach and players swap ends and the drill starts over.

Drill: Cut-off Relays Great drill for building skills, speed, accuracy and confidence This drill is a great skill builder. There will be at least 5 players on a team. They line up about 30 feet apart and stretch about 120 feet across the field. You will have two teams or "lines" competing against each other. Make sure to have you catcher, first baseman, and third baseman on one end. Have an outfielder on the opposite end. Your middle infielder should be in the middle. The drill will start for both lines at the same time. The first team to take the ball to the other end and get it back is the winner. The ball must be caught and thrown by each player in the line. Teams may not skip a man. The catchers should practice catching and tagging a runner. The middle infielders should be taught to properly "round" the ball, make a proper relay catch and quick throw. We often do this drill and the losing team must do 5 or 10 pushups or squat thrust.

The distance between players should be matched to the age of the players working. You may also have the outfielder let the ball go and hit the fence, before he goes retrieves it and makes his throw to the cutoff man. You may also want to make this a "total team" drill with the whole team having to catch and throw the ball to cover a long distance. If you have the room to do this, it is great to have the team work together to beat the clock. They must beat a set time or they "pay". You may also want to have the "line" make more than one trip down and back. It is great to make each "line" take the ball to the other end three times.

Cancer - Handling the Diagnosis

There probably aren't too many people that are not fearful of the dreaded word cancer. Along with this there is not likely a lot of families that have not been touched directly or indirectly by someone that has been afflicted with it.

Unfortunately, it is not a disease that is going to go away anytime soon, and it is not one that you can hide from. It's sad that many people will be suffering in some way physically yet refuse to go to a Doctor for fear they will be diagnosed with this disease. It's important to know that Cancer is not an automatic death sentence.

Let's talk about one of the more common types, which is Breast Cancer. It is probably the most dreaded by women. It certainly is not something to be taken lightly. However, approaching it the right way can make all the difference in your progression with your treatment and getting your health back.

To begin with, it's easy to say stay positive. From the time, that there is even a suspicion of cancer there is a whole gambit of emotions that one is affected with. It may all start with having a routine test done such as a mammogram and then getting a call back that something didn't look right. The initial thought right away is that it's malignant. Automatically one starts diagnosing themselves. Right at this point, whether its cancer or not you have to take control.

As long as a person feels they are in control of a situation then they think for clearly, act more positively, and usually make the right decisions.

This may sound a little unusual but assume that it is malignant, instead of fretting about "what if." Now you have to make some decisions how you are going to mentally handle this. This is where you need to prepare all the questions or at least get them on paper because there is no doubt they are all running through your mind. At least once they are where you can read them you can start dealing with them. 

By the way, if you want to have a good cry then goes right ahead. Once this is past though remember if you are diagnosed with Breast Cancer, it doesn't control you, in fact you control it because you will be the one making decisions on how to get rid of it.

When the cells of a glia multiply, a malignancy is forming. Initially there will not be any symptoms. Unfortunately the cancer of the glia is very aggressive, that is, develops quickly. By the time symptoms are noticed a tumor is growing.

What is gliblastoma multiforme?

GBM, as glioblastoma multiforme is called, is the deadliest, most aggressive form of brain malignancy. GBM can form anywhere in the brain, and is the highest grade of cancer, a grade 4. There is no cure. There are 500,000 cases a year in the U.S.

What are GBM symptoms?

The symptoms are directly related to where the tumor is located in the brain. Brain malignancy is difficult to diagnose because for every group of symptoms there are multiple possible diagnoses. For instance, when my husband began searching for words, we thought he was experiencing "senior moments." Yet, he quickly progressed to no longer knowing the names for objects. Then he could no longer spell or read. These symptoms progressed over four weeks.

How is glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) diagnosed?

When brain involvement is expected, the MRI is performed. The MRI will show up the tumor, where it is located, its shape, and it its size. From a biopsy, tissue samples are sent to pathology where the tumor is diagnosed.

What is the treatment standard for glioblastoma (GBM)?

The first line of defense is surgical removal, called a resection. Not all GBMs are operable. If the malignancy is located at the brain stem or anywhere else where resection would cause more harm than improvement, then surgery is not an option. The next line of defense is radiation therapy, five days a week, for four to seven weeks, along with chemotherapy. When the radiation is completed, then there will be a maintenance protocol of continued chemotherapy for several months.

What is the prognosis for this type of cancer?

Poor, glioblastoma multiforme is incurable. Other GBM tumors will form, and other surgeries may be performed. Aggressive radiation and chemotherapy will be offered. Life expectancy is anywhere from few weeks to a couple of years.

The most aggressive and deadliest form of brain cancer is glioblastoma multiforme. This is the type of cancer that Ted Kennedy had. There is no cure for this cancer. Treatment options may include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Stomach Cancer - Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment and Prognosis

Stomach cancer is common throughout the world and affects all races, it is more common in men than women, and has its peak age range between 40 and 60 years old. Mortality is higher in Japan and Chile, presumably because of the different diets in those countries where they are less dependent on red meat.

Over the last 25 years the incidence of this type of cancer in the western world has decreased by 50% and the resulting death rate is less than a third of what it used to be but in less developed countries it is still a major cause of death, probably because in these countries by the time the disease is diagnosed (usually by means of a Barium meal) the stomach cancer is at a very advanced stage.

TYPES OF STOMACH CANCER

Stomach Cancer - Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment and Prognosis

There are several different types of stomach cancer, some of which are very rare. The most common types start in the glandular cells of the stomach lining (adenocarcinomas), this is where stomach acid and digestive enzymes are made, and where most cancers start. When the tumor becomes more advanced, it can travel through the bloodstream and spread to organs such as the liver, lungs, and bones. Cancers that start in the lymphatic tissue (lymphoma), in the stomach's muscular tissue (sarcoma) or in the tissues that support the organs of the digestive system (gastrointestinal stromal tumors) are less common and are treated in different ways.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Early clues to stomach cancer are chronic dyspepsia and epigastric discomfort, followed in later stages by weight loss, anorexia, a feeling of fullness after eating, anemia and fatigue. Blood in the stools may also be present and if the Cancer is in the Cardia (top) vomiting may occur.

CAUSATION
The exact cause is unknown although the presence of the Helicopter pylori bacterium seems to be a major factor. Predisposing factors include environmental influences such as smoking and high alcohol intake. Because stomach cancer is more common amongst those with a family history and with people with type A blood, genetic factors are also implicated. Dietary factors, particularly methods of food preservation such as pickling, smoking or salting also have an influence on the prevalence.

DIAGNOSIS
Stomach cancer is diagnosed through an examination that may include an upper gastrointestinal (GI) series; endoscopy or gastroscopy where a thin flexible tube is passed down the throat so the doctor can see into the stomach, esophagus and upper part of the bowel Barium meals and Barium swallows. Because the cancer can spread to the liver, the pancreas, and other organs near the stomach as well as to the lungs, the doctor may order a CT scan, a PET scan, an endoscopic ultrasound exam, or other tests to check these areas.

The cancer can spread (metastasize) to the esophagus or the small intestine, and can extend through the stomach wall to nearby lymph nodes and organs. Metastasis occurs in 80-90% of individuals with stomach tumors, with a five year survival rate of 75% in those diagnosed in early stages and less than 30% of those diagnosed in late stages.

TREATMENT
Although the cancer may be treated with surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy, in many cases surgery is the treatment of choice. Even in patients whose disease is not considered surgically curable, resection offers a palliative effect and improves potential benefits from chemotherapy.

The nature and extent of the cancer determines what kind of surgery is most appropriate. Common surgical procedures include, partial and total removal of the stomach.
Antiemetics can control nausea, which increases as the cancer advances. In the more advanced stages, sedatives and tranquilizers may be necessary to control anxiety. Narcotics are commonly necessary to control sever and unremitting pain.
In some cases of advanced stomach cancer, a laser beam directed through an endoscope can vaporize most of the tumor and relieve obstruction without an operation.

PROGNOSIS
Stomach cancer is curable if detected early, but most people don't seek medical help until the disease is quite advanced, possibly because symptoms occur late and are often vague and non-specific. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidant vitamins (such as A and C) appears to lower the risk of stomach cancer. The rate of cancer is about doubled in smokers so the cessation of smoking is essential.

In the United States and most of the Western world, the 5-year survival rate ranges from 5-15%. In Japan, where stomach cancer often is diagnosed early, the 5 year survival rate is about 50%. Five year survival rates for more advanced stomach cancers range from, around 20% for those with regional disease to almost nil for those with distant metastases.

Treatment for metastatic stomach cancer can relieve symptoms and sometimes prolong survival, but long remissions are not common. The survival of inoperable stomach cancer is usually only a few months if untreated. With chemotherapy the average survival is about 12 months. If cancer is found before it has spread, the five-year relative survival rate is about 61%.

Healing from cancer must begin where the cancer started - the human mind pattern. Whatever is not in your mind-pattern cannot happen to you. If cancer has happened to you, cancer or the belief in cancer is in your mind pattern.

I hear many people, mainly Christians, always talking about not claiming a thing. Well, when it comes to disease they don't have to claim the disease because the disease has already claimed them. Just because you say you don't or won't claim a thing doesn't mean you won't have or suffer from the thing you profess to not claim. If you don't claim a thing (on the surface with words) but in your heart you fear the thing and believe in the thing, you GOT IT!

You only have cancer once you believe in cancer. You can only die from cancer if you believe you can die from cancer. It's predominantly mental. Why do you think doctors can tell a person that they have only six months to live and in six months the person dies of cancer? I witnessed this with my father back in 1994. They told pops he had only six months to live and he bought it. The man died in six months precisely.

Doctors know that a cancer patient who is blasted with radiation and inundated with chemotherapy will succumb from these treatments within six months and cancer will get the blame.

Western doctors are in error for telling scared and faithless cancer patients/victims that they only have a certain amount of time to live. This is wrong on doctors' behalf. You should never tell a person that they are dying or only have a certain amount of time to live. The body manifests what the mind believes. You can't enjoy life knowing you are going to die. Most people don't even truly live life and because they never learned to truly live, they are souls afraid of dying. As Braveheart said, "Every man dies, but not every man really lives." Most people are alive but they are not "living."

In the East, the doctors don't tell the patient that they have a fatal disease and only have a certain amount of time to live. However, they do tell family members.

Big Money of K.J.L.H. 102.3 F.M.'s Front Page show here in Los Angeles got mad at me back in 2000 because I said on the radio that I would never get cancer. Big Money said I couldn't say that. Then he brought up the fact that Minister Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam had prostate cancer. Now what does Minister Farrakhan having cancer have to do with Djehuty Ma'at-Ra? Farrakhan and Djehuty are two different individuals and our lifestyles are very different, especially our diets.

I can say that I will NEVER get cancer because I mean that! It's not in my mind-pattern. I can't conceive of this in my mind. More importantly, I know what cancer is and what causes cancer. Even better, I know how to prevent and remedy cancer.

So first of all, in healing cancer, you need a strong and positive mindset and strong will to live.

Your typical and degenerate diet MUST change! No more meats, dairy, refined grains and carbohydrates, refined starches, etc. The diet MUST become 100% raw foods, preferably organic.

The best foods to eat to eradicate cancer are green colored foods - kale, parsley, spinach, greens, cabbage, broccoli, etc. Greens foods are great alkaline foods saturated with nutrients. Green drinks or veggie cocktails drank daily are exceptional. They give instant life to the cells.

VEGETABLES. Just about all vegetables should and can be eaten. Green vegetables and vegetables with color are best! Vegetables are ALIVE and laced with enzymes, minerals, and other valuable nutrients. Do not cook the vegetables. Cooking KILLS! Cooked food played a pivotal role in the cancer in the first place.

FRUITS can be eaten too, but stay away from eating a lot of citrus fruits and not because they are acidic, because they are not. In spite of their natural acids, citrus fruits are very alkaline. Melons are the best fruits to eat in healing from cancer followed by various berries, especially those with antioxidant properties (blueberries, Goji, lycii, elderberry, etc.)

OXYGEN/OZONE Therapy. These therapies are big in Europe where they are also legal unlike here in the United States. If you have an oxygen machine or ozonator and a body bag/suit, oxygenate or ozonate yourself twice daily (45-60 minutes). The oxygen or ozone will penetrate your skin and saturate your blood killing cancer cells instantly. You can also take oxygen/ozone baths daily. In these baths, you leave the machine going while in the tub. An oxygen/ozone bath should be anywhere from 1-2 hours. You can enhance this bath by adding a few pounds of sea salt (to alkalize the water) and MSM sulfur. Every glass of water should be oxygenated or ozonated in addition to being alkaline. If you don't have an oxygen or ozone machine, you may add oxygen drops (20-30 drops per glass) or 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide (1/8 of an ounce) to your water. You can also add these to your bath water if you don't have an oxygen or ozone machine.

Oxygenated oil (Oz-Oil) can be used to rub the entire body down with so as to help oxygenate the body. Oz-Oil is very healing!

MAGNETS are great if you have tumors. You will need powerful magnets to shrink the tumors. Magnet strength sizes 4,600 gauss to 14,000 gaass are ideal. The higher the better! Never sleep with magnets above your eyes (preventing brain ionization). The magnets should be applied to the tumor and left on.

HERBS are very ideal in healing cancer. You will want to use blood cleansing herbs such as Echinacea (purpurea, pallida or angustifolia), Goldenseal root, Chickweed, Manjistha, Yellow Dock, Cerasee, Burdock Root and Dandelion Root. Blood cleansing herbs will also cleanse the lymphatic fluid too.

You will also want to use tissue rebuilding and repairing herbs too, such as Comfrey Root, Burdock Root, Sarsaparilla and Chaparral.

Immune boosting herbs are also ideal in healing from cancer. These herbs include Suma, Ginseng, Astragalus, Echinacea, Goldenseal, Pau D'Arco (LaPacho), Cat's Claw, Yew Tips and Codonopsis to name a few. These herbs stimulate the body's natural anti-cancer defenses. They increase the activity of natural killer cells which recognize and destroy cancer cells at first sight and improve the efficacy of interferon (protective protein when a foreign substance/invader is lurking).

SEAWEEDS are important to consume in healing from cancer because they are very oxygenating, alkalizing and nutritious. The best seaweeds to consume are Super Blue Green algae, Chlorella, Spirulina, Dulse, Irish Moss and Kelp. Seaweeds will eradicate the damaging effects of radiation from radiation treatment.

MUSHROOMS are very healing in cancer. You will want to use the healing and therapeutic mushrooms - Reishi, Maitake and Shitake. Maitake is the most potent of the healing mushrooms. These mushrooms should be taken in extract form. These mushrooms greatly help to dissolve tumor growth.

WATER or hydrotherapy can be used in the healing regimen for cancer. The best water to drink for healing purposes is alkaline water followed by distilled water. You will want to add Clear Quartz crystal to this water as this will greatly transform the water and make it very healing. Crystal water will eradicate the damaging effects of radiation - guaranteed! Adding liquid chlorophyll also boosts this water's healing ability.

CRYSTAL THERAPY is undoubtedly the most important aspect of healing for cancer. Crystals work on the energy level where cancer begins. Crystals can cause cancer frequencies to change and thus rapidly begin the core healing aspect.

COLON CLEANSING is imperative in healing from cancer. It is very true that all sickness, disease and even death begin in the colon. However, healing also begins in the colon. Colonics and enemas are essential in healing from cancer, especially colon and rectal cancers.
