Breast Cancer Survival Rate - Stage 4 Breast Cancer

The breast cancer survival rate for Stage 4 breast cancer is much lower than for breast cancer detected at earlier stages.

Stage 4 breast cancer, or advanced breast cancer, has metastasized to other tissue including bone tissue, lung tissue, or the liver. When breast cancer has overwhelmed the body's natural defenses and spread this far by the time the cancer is first diagnosed, the 5-year survival rate drops to 16%-20% in the United States (American Cancer Society).

Up to 5% of white women in the U.S., and up to 9% of black women have advanced breast cancer spread to distant tissue at the time of first diagnosis (SEER). This difference is usually attributed to poverty and lack of health insurance.

Breast Cancer Survival Rate - Stage 4 Breast Cancer

In general, women who have advanced breast cancer at the time of diagnosis live approximately 18 months after diagnosis (median survival rate). Those who are still alive five years after their diagnosis of advanced breast cancer can live an additional 3.5 years (median survival rate) according to the American Cancer Society.

Since this is the most deadly category of breast cancer, it is important to work closely with all the health care providers. New treatments are being developed all the time, and second, or even third opinions may give the patient more information about newly discovered successful solutions.

Early detection is clearly the most important factor in breast cancer survival rates. Breast cancer detected at Stage 1 while it is still localized to the breast has a survival rate of 98%-100%, while metastasized breast cancer first detected at Stage 4 drops down to 16%-20%.

Early detection procedures must include monthly self-examinations done at the same time each month. From age 20-40, healthy women should have clinical breast exams performed by their health care providers every three years. After age 40, the breast exams should be annually and should include a mammogram or similar procedure.

North American white women have the highest rates of breast cancer in the world, but the 5-year survival rate for all stages (Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, and Stage 4) combined is 88% for the U.S. A recent study found European countries have lower 5-year breast cancer survival rates, with England at 77.8% and Ireland at 76.2% (Lancet Oncology).

The difference in these survival rates is usually attributed to life-saving early detection.

3 Types of Skin Cancer Explained

Skin cancer is a condition that develops as a result of prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light. This prolonged exposure then causes the skin cells to grow in a rapid, out of control way ultimately leading to the formation of a cancerous tumour on the skin. Approximately 60,000 people in the UK develop this condition each year. However, what many people do not know is that not all skin cancers are the same. There are actually three different types; Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Malignant Melanoma. In this article article I will be discussing these three in greater detail.

1) BASAL CELL CARCINOMA (BCC):- This is the most common form of skin cancer and accounts for 75% of all diagnoses. As the name suggests it begins when the process of cell division goes wrong in the basal cells of the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin) and a cancerous tumour forms. This tumour often looks like a red ulcer on the skin which may bleed, crust or itch and is often given the nickname 'rodent ulcer'. Basal cell carcinoma typically appears on areas of the body that are exposed to the sun such as the arms, legs and face. Although it is the most common type of skin carcinoma it rarely kills. However, it can disfigure the skin if left untreated for a long period.

2) SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA:- This type of skin cancer accounts for between 15% and 20% of skin cancers. It begins when the squamous cells of the epidermis start to grow in a rapid and uncontrollable way which ultimately leads to the development of a cancerous tumour. This tumour often resembles a hard red lump or a flat, scaly, scab like area. Like BCC, squamous cell carcinoma often appears on parts of the body that are exposed to the sun and rarely kills. However, if left untreated it can spread to other areas of the body.

3 Types of Skin Cancer Explained

3) MALIGNANT MELANOMA:- This type of skin cancer represents less than 10% of diagnoses. It develops in melanin producing skin cells called melanocytes. Malignant melanoma begins when the process of cell division goes wrong in these melanocytes and they start to divide and multiply uncontrollably leading to the development of a tumour. This tumour has a large, brown mole like appearance and can appear on your arms, back, leg or face. Although it resembles a mole there are subtle differences, Malignant melanomas are often a different colour to normal moles and they are often larger and more uneven. Unlike BCC and SCC, this type of cancer is very dangerous if not treated quickly and accounts for the majority of skin cancer fatalities.

I hope this article has given you an insight in to this type of cancer. Whilst skin blemishes and odd looking moles may be non-cancerous they are a cause for concern. If you notice anything suspicious on your skin which does not disappear within a month then you should go see your doctor immediately. Early detection is a key element in the successful treatment of skin cancer and so it is far better to take the time and get yourself tested.

Whilst every intention has been made to make this article accurate and informative, it is intended for general information only. Skin cancer is a very serious, life threatening condition and you should discuss any concerns, treatments or lifestyle changes fully with your doctor.

Cancer Remission: What Is It Exactly?

Many people seem to have a distorted and incorrect definition of the word "remission," as it is used in relation to cancer patients. Most commonly people seem to believe that going into remission means that the patient is successfully treated and safe.

However, according to the American Cancer Society, cancer remission is a "period of time when the cancer is responding to treatment or is under control. In a complete cancer remission, all the signs and symptoms of the disease disappear...Complete cancer remissions may continue for several years and be considered cures."

So, someone who goes into cancer remission is not showing signs or symptoms of the cancer. It doesn't matter how many cancer cells are still going strong and growing in the body of the patient, for any time frame that it isn't causing "signs and symptoms," the patient is said to be in remission.

Cancer Remission: What Is It Exactly?

Oddly enough, there isn't much discussion in the advertisements for traditional cancer treatments regarding the extension in the length of life for the patient. And there aren't many discussions about the quality of life for the patient.

These two concepts are not factored in when talking about "cancer remission" in a patient.Typically speaking, cancer remission refers to shrinkage in the size of a tumor or to the change in some of the tumor markers. Tumor markers are substances, usually proteins, which are produced by the body in response to cancerous growth or tissues. However, a lot of the markers are also found in non-cancerous conditions so they aren't really a good diagnostic tool for cancer.

Traditional cancer therapies are successful in shrinking tumors and reducing tumor markers. For this reason, cancer remission is used as the indication of "successful" cancer treatment.

Cancer remission doesn't necessarily mean the patient doesn't die. For example, a patient is said to have been successfully treated for cancer if the therapies put them into remission, even if they die from pneumonia. Despite the fact that the pneumonia was only fatal because of the cancer therapies, because cancer remission existed, it was successful treatment.

To most people, no treatment that still results in death should be considered successful. However, when it comes to cancer remission, that's exactly what can happen when they pursue only traditional cancer treatment options.

Astrology's Cancer Lucky Days - The Luckiest Time of Month for You

Numerology and Cancer's Lucky Days

Cancer's celestial number from Numerology is an eight, and the Moon, Cancer's ruling planet, has a numerological value of three. Taking the sum of these two numbers gives us the master number of (11). Note that in Numerology, doubled numbers such as (11), (22), and (33) are referred to as Master numbers. These numbers have special significance and are usually interpreted as they are. However, for the purposes of finding your lucky days, we will reduce this number to it's fadic sum of (2). These two numbers, (11) and (2) are especially lucky for people born under Cancer. Numerology predicts that days of the month where the day number reduces to a two will hold extra good fortune for you. The following days fit this criteria: the 2nd, 11th, 20th, and the 29th. Cancers should also look for chances to play the numbers (11) and (2) in games of chance. Casino dice games like craps, where the number (11) is a winning combination tend to favor people born under this sign.

Cancer's Lucky Hours

For persons born under Cancer, the luckiest hours of the day are those in which the Moon is the ruling planet. If you know the time of sunrise, you can calculate these hours when fate is on your side. Just consult the table below for the current day of the week.

Sunday: The luckiest hours for Cancers are the 4th, 11th, and 18th hours after sunrise.

Complex Ovarian Mass - Does a Complex Ovarian Mass Mean I Have Cancer?

If you have been told that you have a complex ovarian mass, does that mean that you also have cancer? Not necessarily, but it doesn't rule it out either.

What Is A Complex Ovarian Mass?

A complex ovarian mass is a cyst that is filled with both fluid and solid mass. This is different than a simple cyst which is filled with fluid and rarely cancerous. A cyst which has solidified has a greater chance of being malignant, or cancerous.

Complex Ovarian Mass - Does a Complex Ovarian Mass Mean I Have Cancer?

How Do I Know If It Is Malignant (cancerous) or Benign (non-cancerous)?

The only way any doctor can tell if a cyst on your ovaries is cancerous or not is to do a biopsy - go in and take out a small sample of tissue and examine it - or use a CA-125 test which takes a sample of blood and tests it for any elevated levels of the cancer antigen-125 protein.

The problem with the CA-125 test is that it is not 100% reliable when used on it's own. Other conditions can cause a false positive including pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, other ovarian cysts and pregnancy. If the levels are not high enough, a false negative would be presumed and the cancer would go undetected.

What Are The Causes and Symptoms Of Ovarian Cancer?

If you have a complex ovarian mass and are worried about cancer, you should know that new studies show that women who are postmenopausal and taking hormone therapy are at a greater risk of developing ovarian cancer. Both estrogen/progestin combination therapy and estrogen only therapy pose an equal risk according to the National Cancer Institute.

Women who are postmenopausal have a greater risk of developing cancer to begin with. Regular screenings and exams should be given. Ovarian cancer is usually not found until it is in it's later stages because the symptoms can mimic other diseases. The exact cases of ovarian cancer are still basically unknown.

Symptoms can include:

Bloating, fullness or pressure in the abdomen Urgent urination Pain and discomfort in the pelvic region Gas, nausea or indigestion Changes in bowel and bladder habits Pain during intercourse Lack of energy and depression Pain in the lower back Menstrual changes
**If any of these symptoms are persistent or get worse, you should seek the advice and care of a doctor immediately.

Any woman who is worried that she could develop cancer because of a complex ovarian mass should know that the percentages are still relatively low and that the situation should be monitored very closely.

Eating well and staying active throughout your lifetime can stave off diseases and keep you feeling and looking your best. Many of us go through life thinking that the worst will never happen and we all pray that it never does, but sometimes life can throw us a few curves and we need to be prepared for whatever that may be.

Prostate Cancer Life Expectancy

Men, how long are you going to live with or without prostate cancer? If you're being honest, you really don't know. We all have a life expectancy based upon general statistical probabilities but none of us know how or when we're going to die.

No matter what the illness or disease that may inflict us including prostate cancer, we still can't be certain when we're going to die. We know at some point our own mortality will become evident. Just because you may have prostate cancer however, doesn't mean you've been given a death sentence.

Here are some facts about prostate cancer

Prostate Cancer Life Expectancy

1. Prostate cancer is generally considered a slow growing carcinoma. This means you may have many high quality of life years ahead of you... that is if you're not hit by a truck on the way to work on the freeway.

2. Prostate cancer typically advances through four major stages. At what stage you're diagnosed with prostate cancer, will determine your probable chances of dying due to complications of the cancer.

3. As you get older, your risk of contracting prostate cancer rises. Men have a lifetime risk or chance of contracting a prostate malignancy of about one in 10 that increases as we get older. Good news! You've survived into your 70s. Bad news... your risk of prostate cancer is one in three.

4. Prostate cancer is considered basically a geriatric disease. That is, the great majority of men, under the age of 60 will not be diagnosed with a cancerous prostate. Remember fact number three above though as your risk increases greatly after age 60.

According to such well known cancer societies and cancer associations as the American Cancer Society, about 92 percent of all the men diagnosed with prostate cancer survive at least five years after the initial diagnosis. Although such a prognosis may seem like less time than you expected, remember that prostate cancer is considered a disease of the aged and many men who contract the disease are well into their 60s and 70s.

So your life expectancy after a diagnosis of prostate cancer, will depend on what stage the cancerous tumor has progressed to, your age and willingness to consider all treatment options. In the end, prostate cancer survivability rests with early diagnosis and effective treatment

Magnesium and Cancer - How Magnesium Cures Cancer

Magnesium has an incredible healing effect on a wide range of diseases as well as in its ability to rejuvenate the aging body. Magnesium is essential for many enzyme reactions, especially in regard to cellular energy production, for the health of the nervous system and brain and also for healthy bones and teeth. Many regions with low magnesium levels have shown an increased cancer rate.

The cancer rate in Egypt was only about 10% of that in America and Europe and it was practically non-existent in the rural areas. An extremely high magnesium intake of 2.5 to 3g, was the main difference. French surgeon, Prof. Pierre Delbet MD was the first prominent researcher to investigate and promote the antibiotic effects of magnesium.

Prof. Pierre Delbet was looking for a solution to cleanse wounds of soldiers in 1915, because he found that traditionally used antiseptics encouraged infections instead of preventing them and actually damaged tissues. Magnesium chloride solution was by far the best solution for this problem in all of his tests.

Magnesium and Cancer - How Magnesium Cures Cancer

Prof. Delbet also found magnesium to be a powerful immune-stimulant, after he performed experiments with the internal application of magnesium chloride. He found out that white blood cells destroyed up to three times more microbes than before, after the intake of magnesium chloride.

Magnesium chloride was found to be beneficial in a wide range of diseases by Prof. Delbet. He found an excellent preventative effect on cancer and cured precancerous conditions such as hyperkeratosis, leukoplasia and chronic mastitis. He was surprised by many of these patients experiencing bursts of energy and euphoria.

Regions with magnesium-rich soil had less cancer than those with low magnesium levels, according to epidemiological studies. A. Neveu, who was another French doctor, cured many diphtheria patients with magnesium chloride within 2 days. Doctor, A. Neveu published 15 cases of poliomyelitis that were cured in a few days, if the treatment was immediately started. He also found magnesium chloride effective with bronchitis, asthma, emphysema and pneumonia.

Indian scientists demonstrated how the incidences of tumors of the breast in rats, could be reduced from 100% to between 46-57% by single applications of magnesium chloride, Vitamin C, Vitamin A or selenium. Tumor incidences were further reduced to between 25.9-31.8%, in combination of two. And finally tumor incidence was reduced to only 12%, when all four nutrients were given.
